Request for proposal
Request for proposal (RFP) is an invitation, typically through a bidding process, to submit a proposal on a service or commodity. It may be a lengthy process for the parties involved but allows for leveraging negotiating ability and purchasing power. The RFP process brings structure to the procurement decision. Often used by government agencies, Group Purchasing Organizations (GPO), Blanket Purchase Agreements or where the buyer is looking for specifics typically outlined in the RFP. RFP may also be utilized as a formal equivalent of brief.
Simply, the RFP is a written solicitation that conveys a requirement for materials or services that the purchaser intends to buy. The RFP response is a proposal.
